Project Coordinator

TECNALIA is an applied research centre committed to the scientific and technological development of the collaborating companies and the society. TECNALIA is organized and targeted on a sector basis, made up of multi-disciplinary teams. 

In CAFIPLA project the Health Division with its Food & Health Area will conduct the research The group is specialised in Clean Technologies Development, By-product Treatment and Valorisation based on renewable feed-stocks coming from food processing and production as well as ingredient development.

Deutsches Biomasseforschungszentrum Gemeinnutzige GmbH

DBFZ is a public research institute of the Federal Ministry of Food and Agriculture (BMEL). The key scientific mission of DBFZ is to support the efficient integration of biomass as a valuable resource for sustainable energy supply based on wide-ranging applied research. The department “Bioenergy Systems” has built up a comprehensive know-how and expertise on the analysis and assessment of stakeholders, supply chains and technology value chains, which will be beneficial to the CAFIPLA project. 

In CAFIPLA the “Bioenergy Systems” department contributes with its vast experience on biomass potential analyses.

Idelux Environnement

IDELUX Environnement is responsible for the waste treatment, from their collection to their valuation. IDELUX Environnement is managing household waste within the Luxembourg province of Belgium. 

In CAFIPLA IDELUX Environnement will be helpful for organic waste, digestate, sludge or other biomass supply. The group will share its knowledge and properties in the biowaste flow as well as the operation of the anaerobic digestion plant and the composting facilities.

Biopract GmbH

Biopract GmbH is a SME active in the field of industrial enzyme development and application. Biopract performs analyses of plant-based biomass and offers tailored enzyme products for the biogas process. 

In CAFIPLA, the main task attributed to Biopract is the selection of appropriate enzymes for the pre-treatment of different type of organic side and waste streams to provide input materials / feedstock for the Carboxylic acid platform as well as the Fiber platform.

Universität für Bodenkultur Wien - Dept. IFA-Tulln

The University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences, Vienna (BOKU) comprises 15 departments and four service centres in Vienna, as well as several experimental centres around Vienna. The Department of Agrobiotechnology (IFA-Tulln) is located in Lower Austria and was founded in 1994 as an independent research institute focusing on biotechnology for agriculture. In 2004 the institute was incorporated into the BOKU and is now a department with six institutes. 

In CAFIPLA IFA will be involved in the characterization of organic waste materials, the development and optimization of combined mechanical and biochemical pre-treatment of organic waste streams to produce input streams for fermentation processes and fibre applications.The

FRD - Fibres Recherche Developpement

FRD is a private innovation company and engineering platform for industrial projects to promote the emergence and development of innovative applications for agricultural fibres. FRD is one of the bio sourced materials sector’s main representatives. FRD has expertise in the full range of: 1.) formulating materials that incorporate natural fibres, 2.) mastering the fractionation and functionalization, 3.) characterization and quality management an 4.)database of market, products, specifications, process, resource.

In CAFIPLA the main task attributed to FRD is the recovery of fibres of different type of side streams combined with purification and application development

Organic Waste Systems Research foundation (OWS RF)

OWS RF is a small research and development institution with strong connections to Dranco NV and Organic Waste Systems. Dranco NV has developed innovative and patented designs for biogas plants with more than 30 years of experience in the field. OWS offers services in biogradability, composatbility and ecotoxicity testing, auditing, controlling and sorting of different waste streams and performs LCA studies.

In CAFIPLA OWS RF is the lead research partner for the optimization of the carboxylic acid platform (CAP) and is a task member in the validation of the CAFIPLA techniques at pilot scale.

Leibniz Institute for Agricultural Engineering and Bioeconomy e.V.

The Leibniz Institute for Agricultural Engineering and Bioeconomics is a nationally and internationally operating research centre. At the interface of biological and technical systems, the institute follows an interdisciplinary approach, combining basic research with a high degree of application
orientated research.

In CAFIPLA  the main task attributed to ATB is the transformation of side and residual streams into the carboxylic acid – lactic acid.

UNIVERSITEIT GENT - Center for Microbial Ecology and Technology (CMET)

The CMET at Ghent University is specialized in the study and application of mixed microbial communities. The research domains are (1) Applied Microbial Ecology, (2) Host-Microbiome Interaction Technology, (3) Life Support systems for Space, (4) Microbial Electrocatalysis
and Electrochemical engineering, (5) Resource Recovery and Valorisation and (6) Water Treatment and Production.

In CAFIPLA CMET will be mainly involved in the PRE-TREATMENT VIA CARBOXYLIC ACID PLATFORM by utilizing online monitoring tools (i.e. flow cytometry) for the characterization of microbial communities. 

Biotrend – Inovação e Engenharia em Biotecnologia, S.A.

Biotrend is a research-based SME focused on the development, optimization, de-risking and scale-up of bioprocesses for industrial
biotechnology. The core activity of Biotrend is the development of
novel bioprocesses and their transition from lab scale to bioprocesses that can be implemented in production
scale, process integration and early evaluation of the technical and economic feasibility of processes before
investment in higher scale trials are performed.

In CAFIPLA Biotrend will be mainly involved in  developing, optimising and scaling up the process for
the production of PHAs using carboxylic acids as main carbon source.

Avecom

Avecom is an innovative SME specialised in steering and optimizing microbial processes in environmental and industrial applications. The company originated 20 years ago as a spin-off of the Faculty of Bioscience
Engineering (University of Ghent). The research activities of Avecom include both the use of conventional techniques in a new framework and
the development of new technologies for existing and persistent problems.

In CAFIPLA Avecom main task is related to their expertise in the domain of heterotrophic bacterial fermentation to produce single cell protein.

DECHEMA e.V. - Society for Chemical Engineering and Biotechnology

DECHEMA e.V. brings together experts from a wide range of disciplines, institutions and generations to stimulate scientific exchange in chemical engineering, process engineering and
biotechnology. DECHEMA identifies and evaluates emerging technological trends and facilitates the transfer of research results into industrial applications.

In CAFIPLA DECHEMA e.V is mainly involved in the lead of dissemination, communication
and exploitation activities as well as the market analysis.
